From running away from home to undergoing plastic surgery at 11 and a ‘fake marriage’ with Ritesh Singh: Rakhi Sawant reveals shocking details

Rakhi Sawant, recently seen on the latest season of Bigg Boss Marathi, opened up about her personal life and journey. She spoke exclusively to Bharti Singh and Harsh Limbachiyaa on their latest podcast. Rakhi opened up about her struggles, plastic surgery, and more. Here is what you need to know:

On childhood struggles

Rakhi shared, “My mother often fought with my father because she wanted a better life for us. I used to tell her, ‘I want to become something in life, I don’t want to just get married.’ My mother supported me a lot. She even sold her jewellery so we could rent a tiny house and move away. After a long struggle, my sister and I stayed there with her and kept working hard. Eventually, my mother separated from my father. My brother was studying in a convent hostel, but people around us believed girls didn’t need education because they would ‘get married anyway.’ That’s when my struggle truly started.”

Rakhi recalled how she worked for Rs 50 to help her family when she was only nine years old. She later confirmed that she had run away from home to fulfil her dream of entering Bollywood. However, her mother later supported her and lived with Rakhi in Bandra. She said, “One day, someone from the film industry noticed me and asked if I could dance. I said yes, and that led me to work on Joru Ka Ghulam. On the very first day, Govinda accidentally bumped into me after lunch, and I was shocked and nervous. Back then, I would wake up at six in the morning, get ready, and even buy my own clothes for auditions and shoots. I started with tiny roles, but gradually bigger opportunities came my way. After that came projects like Main Hoon Na and others. By then, I had become more confident and had started earning money too.” She also mentioned running away from home before making it big in Bollywood because her parents were initially not supportive of her career choice.

She said, “When ‘Pardesiya’ became popular, I was still casually eating golgappas on the street. I had no idea what it meant to be a star. In fact, instead of earning much, I had invested my own savings into my work. I even sold the small one-room kitchen home that I had managed to buy through dance performances and private shows. At one point, I told my mother, ‘I don’t want to continue this kind of work anymore.’ Then I decided I wanted to make music videos instead, and eventually a video project changed my life. Around the same time, Main Hoon Na and ‘Pardesiya’ brought me recognition in the same year.” Rakhi also recalled a scary incident during a shoot involving water. “I didn’t know how to swim properly, and water went into my nose while filming. Someone had to pull me out and help me recover. I still remember the people who helped me that day and feel grateful to them,” she added.

How she helped her family financially

She said, “With my earnings, I helped arrange my sister’s wedding, bought her jewellery, and even gave my family a flat. I had to manage everything on my own, and sometimes there still wasn’t enough money left. From a very young age, I became like a parent to everyone in my family. Even today, whenever my brother or sister need help, I try to support them. I helped them settle down, supported their education, and made sure they became well educated. As for me, I couldn’t continue my own studies and struggled academically because life circumstances were very difficult.”

Rakhi said, “When I used to go to offices for auditions, people would judge me only by my appearance. They would look me up and down and reject me immediately. I was extremely thin at that time, and many other girls who fit the glamorous image got more opportunities. I was turned away from countless offices. I kept wondering what was wrong with me. Back then, I looked very skinny and young. Eventually, I started feeling pressure to change my appearance because I believed that was the only way to survive in the industry.”

Rakhi mentioned that she got surgery done at the age of11 to get work. She added, “I decided to undergo cosmetic surgery. At first, doctors refused because they felt I was too young, but I was determined to make it in Bollywood and kept insisting. It was extremely expensive for me at that time, so I worked hard through dance performances and saved money for it.” She further explained that she felt the industry focused more on appearance first, while talent was appreciated later. According to her, changing her looks helped her get noticed in front of the camera, even though she always believed she had talent too.

“I have seen a very rough side of life. Growing up, I was surrounded by difficult and sometimes dangerous situations, so I became very alert and protective of myself. Many of the paths I had to walk through in life were messy and challenging. But despite everything, I believe I still managed to stay strong and protect my values. Like a lotus that blooms in mud, I feel proud that I survived those circumstances and built my own identity,” the actress added.

Rakhi reveals why she doesn’t want to get married

“People would often tell me to get married and settle down, but I always carried huge responsibilities on my shoulders. I was the only earning member supporting my family, my siblings, their children, and especially my mother’s medical expenses. For years, my life revolved around working, earning money, and paying my mother’s hospital bills. I would keep performing and taking up work just so I could take care of my family’s needs. Even during some of the biggest phases of my career, my mother was seriously unwell, and that stress never left me.”

TV's 6 female protagonists who were ahead of their time:

Even before the emergence of strong female characters as a trend, TV had been bringing characters that went against the norms, broke the traditions, and silently redefined what it meant to be a woman on television. These protagonists were not just part of the story; they changed it. Here are six Indian TV female characters who were ahead of their time in ways the genre is still catching up to.

Tulsi Virani — 'Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi'

Tulsi Virani — 'Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi'

When the role of a woman was supposed to be a silent bystander, Tulsi Virani was able to stand her ground and uphold her values without ever once yelling or losing her composure. Not only was she the perfect bahu, but also a decision maker who spoke up against injustice even in cases where her own family was concerned. Her strength was never loud, but it was completely undeniable, and she set a standard for female protagonists on Indian TV that the genre spent years trying to replicate.

Prerna Sharma — 'Kasautii Zindagii Kay'

Prerna Sharma — 'Kasautii Zindagii Kay'

Prerna's journey was layered with love, loss, and a resilience that never tipped into martyrdom, and what set her apart was her ability to keep moving forward despite emotional setbacks that would have defined a lesser character entirely. She was never reduced to a single relationship or a single identity but kept rebuilding herself with a quiet, determined dignity that made her one of the most compelling female leads of her era. Her story understood something that Indian TV rarely did at the time, that a woman's strength is most visible not in her victories but in how she rises after her losses.

Maya Mehrotra — 'Beyhadh'

Maya Mehrotra — 'Beyhadh'

Maya broke every expectation of what a female lead on Indian TV was supposed to look and feel like, arriving as a character who was ambitious, obsessive, deeply flawed, and unapologetically intense in a way that the genre had never quite allowed a woman to be before. At a time when female characters were still expected to be paragons of patience and sacrifice, Maya showed that complexity and even darkness could exist in a woman on screen without requiring an immediate redemption arc. She changed the conversation about what Indian TV could do with its female characters.

Sandhya Rathi — 'Diya Aur Baati Hum'

Sandhya Rathi — 'Diya Aur Baati Hum'

Sandhya was not just chasing a dream but actively dismantling the expectations placed on daughters-in-law at a time when Indian TV still treated those expectations as sacred. As an aspiring IPS officer navigating a traditional family, she showed that ambition and devotion were not mutually exclusive, and that a woman could honour her relationships without surrendering herself to them. Her story was not just inspiring in the way that word is usually meant, but genuinely aspirational for an entire generation of women watching her.

Anandi — 'Balika Vadhu'
6/7

Anandi — 'Balika Vadhu'

Anandi's journey from child bride to empowered woman was one of the most deliberately, thoughtfully progressive character arcs on Indian television, told with a patience and honesty that refused to pretend that transformation happens overnight. She represented change not as a sudden awakening but as a slow, hard-won process of becoming, and the show gave that process the time and respect it deserved. In a genre that often reduced its female characters to their relationships, Anandi was always, unmistakably, her own story.

Bigg Boss is no longer limited to the Hindi platform and it is now as popular in other regions as well. The Bigg Boss format now airs across five other regions namely – Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Marathi and Malayalam. They are watched with equal enthusiasm in their respective regions. Bigg Boss Bengali was also held but it survived only two seasons. Let’s take a look at all the hosts of Bigg Boss held all over the country. The hosts are superstars in their own right and each have their own style of connecting with the contestants as well as audience.

Bigg Boss Hindi host Salman Khan

Currently, the show is airing its 15th season. Salman Khan is the reigning name when it comes to Bigg Boss and has hosted for 12 seasons now (4-15). His charisma, attitude and bond is on another level with not only the contestants but also the audience. Though at times, Salman is called out on social media for being biased towards some contestants, audiences also love to see ‘Bhai’ on-screen during Bigg Boss. Be it towards Sidharth Shukla, Shilpa Shinde or Gautam Gulati, fans often expressed their dislike when the host would support them unnecessarily. Salman’s hilarious antics, one-liners, candid revelations and devil-may-care attitude is inimitable and unmatchable. When he gets angry, the contestants wouldn’t be spared – throwing his jacket on the floor, staging a walk out to even threatening to quit the show, Salman is unstoppable when he hosts. Salman also entertains audiences with his dance acts with celebrity guests and never shies away from shaking a leg or two when a song is played. As a host, he would also often intervene in an actor’s personal life to make sure they are on the right track. Salman also gets emotional when his favourite contestants get evicted. In season 14, he got teary-eyed when Jasmin Bhasin had to bid goodbye. (Pics: Instagram)

Bigg Boss Hindi hosts – Arshad Warsi, Shilpa Shetty, Sanjay Dutt and Farah Khan

In the third season, the makers introduced Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan as the host. However, season 4 onwards, Salman Khan took the baton. The 5th season called 'Bigg Boss-Double Vaat' was mainly hosted by the 'Lago Raho Munna Bhai' star. Though Salman Khan was part of the fifth season, he only appeared in the opening and a few eviction episodes. Sanjay Dutt was calm and composed as a host but was not able to leave a mark amongst the Bigg Boss fans. Farah Khan hosted the Bigg Boss spin-off series Halla Bol. Farah is also liked as a host and would often grill the contestants. The makers would also bring her as a guest in the show for conducting ‘courtroom’ sessions in the house. (Pics: Instagram)

Bigg Boss OTT host Karan Johar

Karan Johar hosted the first ever season of Bigg Boss OTT, the digital version of the show. While the show had a limited audience, it ran for six weeks on the streaming app. Karan Johar stepped in as ‘over the top’ host and he indeed was one. He received flak for his biased treatment towards contestant Shamita Shetty and couldn’t really connect with others. Even the contestants complained about his biased nature throughout the show and it was winner Divya Agarwal, who even stood up against him. Several fans were upset and annoyed over his hosting s****s and in a poll run by ETimes TV, audiences voted for Salman Khan as better host. (Pics: Instagram)

He has a good sense of humour too. His wit, spontaneity, and comic timing can crack up anyone almost instantly. This is quite evident in Sudeep’s conversations with the contestants. This indeed encourages the contestants to perform better as they all wanted to get appreciated by their host. (Pics: Instagram)

Bigg Boss Malayalam host Mohanlal

Superstar-host Mohanlal is often spotted looking his stylish best in the show. Over three seasons, from his casual t-shirt looks to formal blazers, the actor was seen in his fashionable best throughout. Mohanlal often radiates a calm nature while hosting. However, he has lost his calm at certain times. The actor would walk into the sets before the shoot and has even lashed out at the wildcard entrants, who broke the rules of the show. In the same season, he also warned the contestants who ended up in a verbal spat during the weekend episode. In one of the episodes, the actor was seen apologising to one of the contestants, on behalf of a hurtful statement from one of the fellow inmates. (Pics: Instagram)

Bigg Boss Marathi host Mahesh Manjrekar

Renowned actor-director Mahesh Manjrekar has been hosting Bigg Boss Marathi for the last three seasons. The show host has a unique style and aura. Along with his style statements, Mahesh is known for his devil-may-care attitude and strict behavior with the show's contestants. Mahesh never tolerates negative approaches, spats, and fights. He proved it correct when he expelled contestants Shivani Surve and Parag Kanhere midway from the show BB Marathi season 2. Mahesh, a few days ago was diagnosed with urinary bladder cancer, and after his recovery, immediately joined the hosting of ongoing Bigg Boss Marathi 3. The actor even shot for the promo with tubes in his body and that totally speaks a lot about his dedication towards the show. Mahesh often says that he can't live without working, and his will power is strong. (Pics: Instagram)

Bigg Boss Telugu hosts Jr. NTR, Nagarjuna and Nani

Jr. NTR has launched the debut season of Bigg Boss Telugu in 2017. Nagarjuna Akkineni succeeded him in 2018 and has been the most successful host ever since. Right from his stylish outfits, entertaining performances in the premieres and finales to encouraging the contestants and giving them a dressing down when needed, Nagarjuna commands a niche following for his style of hosting. Notably, eminent actresses Ramyakrishnan and Samantha Ruth Prabhu (Naga's former daughter-in-law) have made impressive cameos in the reality TV show. While Baahubali fame Ramyakrishnan, who has stepped into Nagarajuna’s shoes for a couple of weekend episodes, has left a lasting impact in season 3, Samantha has charmed fans with her smile and confidence in the fourth edition. Both the actresses are remembered for their brief yet sweet stint in BB Telugu. Nagarjuna is continuing to entertain fans in the ongoing season 5 of Bigg Boss Telugu. Popular actor Nani was seen as a host in the second season. (Pics: Instagram)
